Rick Schatzberg

b. 1954, New York City

Rick Schatzberg’s photographs reflect his interest in exploring and describing places, which he sees as a combination of ethnography, imagination, geography, and memory. He is based in Brooklyn Heights, NY and Norfolk, CT.

A current MFA candidate in the University of Hartford’s limited-residency  photography program (class of 2018), Rick graduated from International Center of Photography’s full-time certificate program in 2015. He has had a varied career, however. Rick holds a degree from Columbia University in Anthropology, studied and played French horn with Cecil Taylor’s Unit Core Ensemble in Ohio and New York City in the 1970s, and spent more than thirty years as an executive and entrepreneur in the publishing and health care industries.

As a migrant from a corporate career, Rick is engaged in his photography practice on a full-time basis. His monograph Twenty Two North, published in June 2015, won first prize in the “One for the Books” competition at the Ballarat Foto International Biennale 2015 (Australia). He is currently at work on a new series in Upstate New York.
